Make Your Own Art presents a dynamic, interactive art experience in our creative space in Margaretville, NY, as part of Upstate Art Weekend. Visitors will step into an immersive installation featuring paintings, drawings, hanging structures, and neon sculptures, where visual artists, educators, and musicians collaborate to create an environment that invites active participation.
For five days, we’ll host drop-in art-making sessions (11 AM–5 PM), where teaching artists provide guidance, materials, and support for painting, drawing, collage and other creative explorations. Background music will enhance the atmosphere, making creativity accessible to all. The space is open to both active participants and those who prefer to observe, explore, and absorb the experience at their own pace.
At the heart of the installation are hundreds of blank canvases and drawing surfaces made from recycled materials, suspended from the ceiling to form shifting pathways. As guests add their own marks, the space transforms in real time, evolving into a collaborative work of art.
On Saturday evening (07/23 @ 7 pm), we’ll celebrate this transformation with a special immersive event. A VJ projection, incorporating artwork created throughout the week, will be set to live, improvisational music. Visual materials gathered from prior sessions—including photos and video of the creative process—will be woven into the projection. Musicians will respond to the shifting imagery in real time, creating a dynamic interplay of sound, light, and movement. For this experience, the space will be cleared of tables and supplies, allowing guests to move freely, sit, dance, or fully immerse themselves.
On Sunday (07/24 @11 AM–5 PM), special interactive activities will further reshape the installation. Visitors will paint on newly introduced surfaces, integrate string, fabric, and three-dimensional elements, and actively engage with the evolving space. Movement becomes part of the artwork itself as participants bend, walk, and interact with the environment in new ways. Background music will enhance this multisensory experience.
On Monday (07/25 @11 AM–5 PM), the installation will be open for visitors to witness its final form—a collective expression of creativity shaped throughout the weekend.
